Ocean Infection

Tiny puff of sea spray
Between surf and horizon
A huge mammal exhales
“There’s a whale!”

Kayt drops her book
Michael appears from the kitchen
Wide window in the dining nook, our portal

We point and words punctuate—
“Whale right!” “Tail! Tail over there!”

But Kyli sees whale-less waters
Her disappointment thick and raw, until
The silhouette of a tail
Appears clear—magic.

She nearly levitates
Shouting with joy
Infecting us all—
Her cousin jumps wildly with her
We clap our hands
Voices high-pitched with excitement
Wonder sparking between us
As our eyes return to the blue
Searching for another breath in the water.

Friendship Is Holding and Being Held

Friendship Is Holding and Being Held

Blessed are You,
Lord our God,
King of the Universe,
for fragrant, fragile friendship.
I hold it reverently
and breathe in deeply.

Blessed are You for the wonder
of holding the attention,
the presence,
the story
of a friend,
and for the miracle
that she is willing to hold
my attention,
my presence,
my story.

Blessed are You,
Lord our God,
King of the Universe,
for friendship—like a pier—
sturdy place to walk together,
look on vast and unpredictable waters,
and to savor a bit of You in
a faithful human companion,
close enough to hold hands.

Wonder Is Love

Wonder Is Love

Blessed are You,
Lord our God,
King of the Universe,
for invitations to wonder.

I used to think
wonder was reserved
for sunsets and lady bugs,
snowflakes and perfect chocolate truffles.

I didn’t know wonder
as universal curiosity,
toward fear and anger,
panic and distrust,
burning bushes and lepers,
temper tantrums and love notes,
and my daughter who talks. so. much.

Blessed are You,
Lord our God,
King of the Universe,
for wonder as a portal to love,
to see and hear,
to be amazed,
to join hands with the “other,”
whether it be the rejected parts of myself
or the unwrapped person in front of me.
